I am Grant Hirst from Eliot, Maine. I have just joined the site.
I went to Camp Wyanoke from 1946 to 1955 and was both a cabin-mate and tent mate of David Franklin Bunting from Melrose, MA and Jack Chandler from Warner, NH. Does anyone know where either of them are?
I have recently come across the Wyanoke songs booklet- beige in color and about 4-1/2" by 11" in size. I also have some old Wyanoke catalogs for when my two boys went there in later years.
My uncle went there in the 30's and spent considerable time at Glenoke- an offsite Wyanoke-sponsored sub camp across the road from the base of the Mt Washington Auto Road. My uncle and I found the cook shack and a couple other buildings (all collapsed) a few years ago but with names of campers in pencil and still plainly visible under the roof boards.
Does anyone remember that Wyanoke also had some kind of presence on the left as you enter Green's Basin on Lake Winnepesaukee? This would have been back in the 30's.
Anyone remember the "bug juice" in gallon glass jugs that went with the once a week cookout? Nowadays the feds wouldn't allow glass jugs for campers!!
Anyone remember the "cage" swim from the wharf down towards "Red Top" and back?
How about "Cap" Taylor and his wife at Lands End and woodscraft classes?
How about the "Golden Arm" story at campfire?
Anyone remember my cousin, Minot Hill (The Weather Man)?
Dave Bentley- are you out there? I believe you started there as a camper in 1949. Am I the oldest one out there or is there someone who started prior to 1946?
Did a reunion ever happen in 2006? I see there was talk about it.
I HOPE TO HEAR FROM SOME OF YOU.

Grant, glad you found this site! Welcome! I started Wyanoke a year after your last and do remember "Cap" Taylor and his wife. Having slept in that little cabin at Lands End on a couple of occasions, I don't know how they both did it all summer long! I believe that cabin was their "home away from home" for many summers.
The "Cage Swim" I now do remember but had forgotten all about it! It must have been an extra credit activity that would allow one to gain extra activity points towards the Honor Camper. I remember seeing a rowboat accompanying each swimmer as they made that trek down to Red Roof and back to the Jr/Sr wharf. Where the name "Cage" came from . . . . maybe Dave could shed some light on that.
One fond memory I have was taking Jr. Lifesaving down at the wharf each morning before breakfast (I think?) for 2-3 weeks, excepting weekends. It was a great experience except for the fact that it was conducted in August. As we all remember some of those August mornings were pretty chilly! The water was warmer than the air as we mastered the "cross chest carry" and other maneuvers.
Welcome again, Grant and thanks for the memories!
