Even today, when I have to get up and leave I say "I have to go to the pines"! After 42 years! LOL. Can you believe? Everyone asks, "what is the pines"?
I can still remember, as a Jr. Norm Risser referring to the bathroom as "The Pines". It still sticks!
Just one of those memories that stuck . . . . . and great memories they were. _________________ '56 - J-9 J. Moulton

Oh, no, not the "Pines". Who can ever forget the "all purpose of all all purposes cleaners, Freddie's favorite, and guaranteed to clear your sinuses and anything else hollow - "Pine-Sol".
Now, what about "the Navy" ?? _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

Did we not have a "Navy Call" for certain Midget campers each night? Had forgotten about that! I think that the OD was primarily responsible for that task but I think we all pitched in to help out! That was a long walk from C-6 to the Midget "pines" in the middle of the night! The hardest part was waking the kids up!
If my memory serves me, I think one of the cabins had a toilet . . . maybe C-4 or C-5? _________________ '56 - J-9 J. Moulton

Actually, Jim, there were four cabins in C-town with toilets: Cs 5,6,7 and 8. Seven was the first on your left as you walked into Cabintown from the dining hall, 6 the first on the right. 8 was WAY down in the woods in a little alcove where the sun never shined. At least that's the way it seemed to me as a camper. I was in C-9, bordering the trail to Pinecone Beach and I always envied the kids who had their own pines. The rest of had to pee in the woods (well, actually, technically we were supposed to walk over to the pines in the Cabintown Chapel. I sure as hell never did.)
The only trouble with having your own pines as a nine-year-old was the fact that it was DARK back there next to the woods, and there was always a HUGE spider in the corner over the toilet. So they all peed in the woods too.
Built-in pines made the job of the Navy Floaters a whole lot less time-consuming, though. You didn't have to walk a completely sleep-drugged little boy for a hundred yards to tinkle. After that, of course, he was wide awake and ready for the ball field.
Chris Gill and I were talking recently about how much things have changed in 40 years. Nowadays, there are separate shower stalls, and the concept of the Senior Pines, with its completely exposed thrones (with Everett Slocum perched on the last one next to the urinals, trying to get his cigarette butts to go in that 1-inch drain hole in the concrete a few feet in front of him) and urinals pretty much a thing of the past. As I've mentioned before, that spot was one of great camraderie a short time after New England Boiled Dinner.
One notable thing about the Senior Pines was the "Water Closet"-style tanks on some of the toilets, with a Walnut tank mounted high above, and a length of rope to get the process started. That was a flush, and you'd best be standing clear after the rope was pulled.
Ahhhhhhhh! The memories come flushing back. _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

The Pines. Just the memory of them brings back the memory of the smell of pine sol. What about the smell of walking past the cess poll by the junior path to the warf after a rain storm? It seems to me there was the story of a councilor falling asleep on the toilet in the senior pines and stood up upon waking but fell fat on his face becasue his legs were asleep. Does that sound familiar to anyone? _________________ Jim Graves

Jim, might that have been J-16 that you were in, in '74? I know my brother Larry was in that cabin one year in the Junior camp. I think it also had a linoleum covered floor? It was one of 3 cabins in the Junior Camp and was on the other side of the road. _________________ '56 - J-9 J. Moulton

The Pines it always smelled sanitary. I always remember the Cook being there. I asked him one time why he was always there, he replied "this is only place that Mrs. B doesn't go." I do remember that one time I was on my way in and I ran into Mrs. Bentley standing outside and asked me to tell the Cook that she wanted to see him. When I saw him I said to him that he was going to be ambushed. At that point I knew what sanctuary truly was. I don't remeber who that Cook was. _________________ 68 S-6 ( Jon Crane ) 69 S-6 ( Kent Newby ) 70 JA-2 ( Dan Mannis ) |
