It doesn't seem possible to be reporting the death of Rich Tucker. Rich was at Wyanoke from 1969 through 1975. His final year was also Wyanoke's, and he was JC in Pat Freeland's tent (S-4) that last summer. From Midget to Staff.

Here are Dave's words:

Greetings,

Wanted to let you know that Rich Tucker passed away on July 23. He had an esophageal cancer to which he gave a good fight. We are all glad that his three year struggle is over. His long time girlfriend Wendy cared for him at their home. He was 57. Somehow I still expect him to come around the corner on a unicycle.

Courage and loyalty,

Dave

On behalf of Camp Wyanoke, I extend deepest sympathies to the Tucker Family, and Wendy, and Sherry and I extend our personal condolences, also, at this time of sadness.

This morning I received a phone call from Nancy Hood telling me that (her husband) Steve Hood passed away last evening. Steve battled illness for several years, including various therapies and heart surgery. On Friday, March 23, he would have been 76 years old.

Steve was a camper (as was his father), a councilor (as was his father), and, known to most of us, the bugler for many years.

The Hood and Bentley families have a very life-long friendship, and Steve and I have been friends "forever".

On behalf of Camp Wyanoke, Sherry joins me in expressing deepest condolences and most sincere sympathies to Steve's wife, Nancy, and to the rest of his family.

Oh No! My last communication with Steve was last fall and it looked as though he was progressing well. I am so sorry and want to send my condolences to Nancy and family. Steve was my JC in J-4 1958. Since then we met at Pat Freeland's home for our 2013 Wyanoke Reunion. We continued to communicate frequently via email since the reunion.

May you rest in peace Steve and please say hi to Jeff Fincun who you will meet soon. Jeff was also at our 2013 reunion and passed away two years ago.

Crying or Very sad

I'm so sorry to hear that! Steve was my JA in 1956 or 57 in Cabintown, and we grew up together, making music and just having a great time, though five years apart. He was a true Wyanoker, and I'm so grateful that Jeff sent him a Blue Wyanoke cap before he died.

My condolences to you, Dave, as I know how close you and Steve were over all these years. And I join you and Jim in offering my sympathy to Nancy and the rest of his family. We'll miss him.

Mike

Not finding a place for "Illness / Distress", I wanted to advise that a familiar 1950s Wyanoke camper has suffered a stroke.

Scott Kent is receiving a year-long rehabilitation at his home in Wilmington, MA, and is expected to spend this summer at his Wolfeboro domicile—across Winter Harbor's waters from my place. Cool

Scott is certainly more well-known than myself, having continued (1957, onwards) at Camp Wyanoke after I'd moved to "The Airpark". I don't recall if he became a counselor. Confused

Reading up on an ailment that would thoroughly-trash my lifestyle, it appears that a stroke is associated closely with "atrial fibrillation" (or "A-fib") of the heart.

It is with deep sadness that I post the death of Gordon Kennington, a Wyanoker from the late 1930's, and the Dad to Bob Kennington, a Wyanoker from more recent times. Bob is a frequent poster to this site.

Gordon (and subsequently Bob), lived at the end of Forest Road, near the Lakes Region Air Park, a spot we all visitied many times during Sunday afternoon "tent activities" time.

Personally, and on behalf of Camp Wyanoke, I extend my sympathies to Gordon's wife, Terri, and to his two children, Bob, and Joan.

Terri has also passed away, two years and two days after my Dad. Joan prepared an obituary that I include as a salute to "The Greatest Generation":

Quote:
Gordon B. Kennington, 97, of Highland Terrace, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at his home in Wolfeboro, NH.

He was born April 27, 1917 in Winthrop, MA the son of the late Henry C. and Edith (Barrett) Kennington. Gordon was a direct decendant of famed author, Thomas Bulfinch (“The ages of Fable”) and Charles Bulfinch, a Boston Architect who designed the Boston State Capital Dome and the Washington Capital Building Dome.

Gordon served as a Lt. Commander in the US Navy during WWII, piloting PBY’s, the Black Cats Squadron, VP-11, in the South Pacific and rescued sailors and downed pilots at sea.

In 1942 he married Gladys V. Siegrist of Zurich Switzerland and had two children, Robert and Joan. Over the years they lived in many places such as Hawaii, Rhode Island, Florida, California, Switzerland and Yugoslavia. Gladys predeceased Gordon in 1975

Gordon attended Camp Wyanoke in Wolfeboro, NH for several years in the late 1930”s and eventually built a summer home nearby on Wolfeboro Neck, near his flying colleague Merwin Horn, who owned the airport for many years.

Gordon was a retired Technical Representative at McDonald-Douglas Aircraft Corporation and a retired US Navy Commander—later, "Fleet Reserve Association".

He is survived by his wife Theresa (Perrault) Kennington, Wolfeboro, NH, his son, Robert Kennington, of Little Torch Key, Florida and his daughter Joan B. Kennington and son-in-law Jan Westerhof, Lincoln, CA .

Burial will be in the Townhouse Cemetery, Tuftonboro, NH

I'd forgotten this account of a USS Arizona survivor, who, after earning his wings, became my Dad's co-pilot:
