My uncle, Bill Donovan, passed away on Sept. 18 at the age of 88. He was a camper in the 1930s, and if remembered by anyone reading this it would likely be for showing up at the dedication of the plaque by the ballfield in 1995. I believe it was he who caused a correction to the motto line on the plaque from Courage and Loyalty to the proper Courage Loyalty. There can't be too many campers left from that era. I'll be wearing my Honor Camper on my lapel at his funeral.

Please accept the condolences of Camp Wyanoke, and my personal condolences, in the death of Bill. I had met bill in the past, and I know that he was a favorite of both my parents.

On a "second generation" golden arm his name is carved into the arm as W. Donovan. I also have some paper work that pertains to his efforts to try and get to the root of naming "Wyanoke".

The Donovans were well connected to Wyanoke, and I appreciate you wearing your Honor Camper in his memory. Thank you.

Please add mine to the condolences Dave offered.

There are some names which define Wyanoke because of their part in its operation, or by the persistence of their names on the rosters and support over the decades - Bentley, Vaughan, Hosmer, Sanderson and most certainly Donovan. I might have run into Bill over my 25 years at Wyanoke, though I don't remember him personally. The pictures you posted in the galleries of him and others in the mountains back in the 30s brought that era to life for me, and will keep his memory alive for years to come.

I quoted something at Garth's funeral that I'd heard somewhere a long time ago. I wish I could claim it, but I can't credit it either:

There are three stages of death: The moment of actual cessation of life, the moment of interrment or cremation, and finally, the last time someone speaks your name.

That third stage is, fortunately, the most elusive for our most cherished.
