I found a bunch of old camp photos and many are the group of legacy campers each summer. I can't remember what we were called. Was it "chips"? Or am I recalling that from some other place. _________________ J-1 1970, Marc Liddle from Scotland

Legacies were called CHIPS.
Our dads went to Wyanoke or mothers went to Winnemont _________________ 1951: C-9. F. Whitemore, P. Durkee.

The only time I remember Chips coming into play at Wyanoke--and I was not one, so there may have been other perks I was unaware of, like an extra bowl of Jello for Sunday evening dessert--was when BMB would announce at one lunch each summer that the Chips photo Tom speaks of would be taken after the meal. BMB would explain what Chip meant as Steve did, and those folks would go out and get a group photo taken.
So my question is, since Wyanokers were on the honor system about being a Chip, and some may have even been confused about their status, did anyone ever photobomb the Chips group photo, i.e., sit in on it even though they weren't a Chip? _________________ Camper: J-8 1965 (Kevin Ryan), J-8 1966 (Mike Freeland), S-6 1967 (Russ Hatch), S-3 1968 (Jeremy Cripps), and JA-2 1969 (Dan Mannis).

Good question, David, and I think the answer is "no". In all the years I sat at the meal table with my Dad (not at Camp), I never heard him once mention that this type of incident had happened. Generally speaking, my Dad knew all of the legacy campers, even if they did not know themselves (?). A more apt condition would have been that a "Chip" didn't show for the picture. _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

My first summer I asked if I should be included. My parents had not been campers but my uncle had been. I was told to go take part in the picture. Does that count as photo bombing. _________________ J-1 1970, Marc Liddle from Scotland

According to popular culture, photo-bombing has only been around, actively, sine the late 2000's, although an earlier version was in place as far back as the mid-1950's. At that time it was popular to try and get into club and activity yearbook pictures, even if you didn't actually happen to be a member of such organization. At Winchester High (well known to many of us) there was usually a faculty advisor present at the set of for photos making sure all photo-ees were card carrying club participants.
At Camp I think it was non-existent because I don't think boys who weren't "chips" felt the need to be in that particular picture. _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

A few familiar faces, about 1953. I can only put a name to one in the lower left—row one, looking like he wants to dart out of the photo session—and that would be David Currier, who attended until at least 1956. Another camper in the second row—second from right—I'd seen around...
Who are the older participants in the back row? The one in the dark shirt looks like one whose name I should remember.

Is that David Bentley second from the right in the second row? _________________ J-1 1970, Marc Liddle from Scotland

I'll take a stab at a few of them:
Bottom Row,in the middle is one of the Vaughn kids..
Just above him is David Bentley
Just above David, in "parade whites" is me
Top row, second from the left, I think is Barry Taintor _________________ 1951: C-9. F. Whitemore, P. Durkee.

Barry Taintor sounds right, and he's back!
Another group (just found), taken perhaps a year or two earlier.
I happen to appear in the very exact center of the photo. (And there's that kid again ).

One of the things that I don't think ever really happened at Camp was keeping a record of the names in the pictures. In retrospect, it would have been very nice to have a companion list with each picture, particularly the large group pictures and tent group pictures, identifying each camper and councilor.
At the time of taking the picture, I am sure most of us recognized who was in it, but, over time, things change and memories begin to grow fuzzy.
I would suggest that this also applies to personal photos of holiday gatherings, birthdays, weddings and receptions, graduations, etc.
Of course, none of us, personally have changed, but what I remember in my mind's eye somehow doesn't match up with what is on the photo paper. _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

I am reminded that (today) I can recognize only two campers—and I am one of them! (And, at that, not so easy to do).
I am also reminded of simpler and secure decades of "Life in America" when I could travel alone by a United Airline's DC-4 all the way from Hawaii to Wyanoke to become part of the Legacy Campers.
