This must be a picture from the 1950's, or possibly the very early 60's. The sail boats are all windabouts. There are no sprints in the picture.

The councillor watching the activities looks a lot like Bob Fox.

Just a guess, but could be Walt Scheirer in the Jr-Sr Shop building a model sailboat with at least one boy. Not sure what most of the other boys are working on, but it needed fine motor skills.

I think David is right. This had to be early in Walt's tour with the Juniors because I was a Junior 1952, 1953, amd 1954 and don't remember too much about working on a large model sailboat. There were at least a couple model sailboats I do remember, but I don't remember that they were something the campers worked on.

You are right about the fine motor skills - those young men are intent with what they are doing. Maybe they are working on one of those pesky, but every-present multi-colored gimp bracelets.

Man what a memory! Which mantel are you referring to, the Chapel or Dining Hall? ("Dining"? More like Frenzy-Feeding). I do remember a sailboat on a mantel somewhere, and it does look like the one Walt's working on.

These really are great pictures. The guy on the tower at the wharf looks like Dick Hawkins (1963 or so), but Dick was in C-town and probably wouldn't have been on the Jr.-Sr. dock very often.

Ah but the memory is spotty. Notice I omitted the location of the mantle displaying a model sailboat in my post. I was hoping someone would say, By golly yes, the sailboat on the ba-da-dih-da mantle. There was also a mantle in the Little Guest House besides the ones in the Dining Room and Chapel. I'm picturing a white, yellow, and blue model sailboat on the dining room mantle under last summer's roster (http://www.wyanoke.com/gallery/Rosters) but am unsure about it.

The most visible of any of the model sailboats was in a cradle on the Midget Dining Room mantle, as David says. Scott Kent and I tried to sail it at the Midget Beach, but, much to out disappointment, it was much more at home on the mantle than in the water.

The technology in model sailboats has come a long way over the years. Here in Wolfeboro, sponsored by the New Hampshire Antique Boat Museum, there is a model class during the winter months in which you make a radio controlled model sailboat, and then in thek summer there is a sailing program in a calm area of water. These are all identical models, conforming to a national standard, and all using the same equipment. The skill comes in the technique of the on-shore handler.

I do not know whatever happened to any of the models around Camp.

What follows is the rest of the Chiang Kai' Shek article from 2002, featuring the Hopewell name and the Airpark. (I don't know—or remember—either person mentioned below).

"...But, ever the student, Hopewell said there are two things he has been interested in learning during the last couple of years. "I'd like to know how to run an airplane," said Hopewell, who has been taking flying lessons with instructor Harland Getz at the Lakes Region Airpark on Wolfeboro Neck.

Describing his first solo flight, Hopewell said his instructor got out of the plane and said, "take off." Hopewell did, and logged his first solo, successfully landing the plane. But he said that now, with the airport essentially without services, he is considering how he will continue his lessons at the Wolfeboro airport. Hopewell also wants to learn to operate a computer. He says he has mastered basic skills, but said he has many questions and would like more instruction.

This retiree continues to challenge himself and expand his horizons. He encourages others who have retired to find out what needs there are in the community, and to reach out to address those needs with their individual talents.

Some people are just "driven"...
