Looking through some items tucked safely away for nearly 50 years, I found a treasure-trove that reminded me of the rifle range at Camp Wyanoke.

Do I have them arranged in the correct order?

I was not the best shot, but I believe the Pro-Marksman badge was first, then Marksman, then Marksman 1st Class, then Sharpshooter.

Sounds right to me. I think we got pins though. I remember wearing my sharpshooter pin with several bars on my scout uniform.

You're right, Dave. It was Pro-Marksman, Marksman, Marksman 1st Class, Sharpshooter, Expert, and Distinguished Expert. Those last two were pretty tough to get.

I believe on Expert you shot at targets with 5 bullseyes, 2 shots in each, prone and standing. In the prone the two shots in each bullseye had to be 18 or higher, so you could shoot a 97 but not have the target count with that one 7 or you could shoot a 90 with all 9's and it would count. You had to do ten targets like this for prone and ten for standing (offhand). For the standing I think you had to get 16 in each bullseye.

I may be confusing this with the Distinguished Expert where you shot prone, sitting, kneeling, and standing and had to meet pretty high standards - ten targets in each position.

As some of you know, we will be moving to North Georgia. This will put us 50 minutes from the kids and grand kids, rather than the 5+ hours it now takes us to get there.

I was going through some old stuff from scouts, and came across some vintage keepsakes. Attached is a picture I took.

It looks like one could add eight "bars" to a Sharpshooter badge. Maybe a few are stored with my other badges?

This displayed framed diploma showed my early (1955) interest in firearms which became a discussion item at the Metro-Dade (Miami) Forensic-Ballistics Crime Lab office until I retired in 1999.

Even 60 years later, I think I could pick Instructor Richard A. Seal out of a lineup.

Over the years we had some very fine instructors at Camp, and we also had some very fine "shots", not to forget Jay James who was a national age group champion with a 22 calibre rifle. Sometime during the 1950s, I think, Wyanoke also entered a team into national competition and did quite quite well. When you consider that we did not feature riflery as a specialty at Camp, it is even more remarkable that a Wyanoke team would do extremely well in a national competition.

Now, on to Richard Seal. He was a riflery instructor, and also, had the job of firing the cannon during the military drill parade ceremony. It was during this performance of his job that he distinguished himself as a "do as I say, not as I do" person in that the cannon shell mis-fired one time and Richard took it to the waterfront in a bucket of water to dump it into the Lake, and when reaching the wharf, he stuck his bare hand into the bucket and removed the shell. I am a little unsure of the next sequence of events, but I do know that the punch line was that Richard wore a rather elaborate bandage on his hand for quite some time during that summer.

Bob, I think there is a spot for a ninth bar in the bottom center. After that there was Expert and Distinguished Expert. Bob Vaughn should chime in. He was the instructor while I was at camp. If memory serves me I think Bob was an Expert or maybe even Distinguished Expert. I also remember him telling us that once you got to a certain level your accomplishments were registered with the FBI.

Even though I was a sharp-shooter with a couple of bars, my memory of Dick Deal is for a different reason.
Back in the early 1950's, when I was either a midget or junior, Dick Seal was one of the leaders on a climb up the mighty Mt Major. I think this included an overnight stay, but I am not positive. At any rate, some of us perilous young climbers collected a bunch of porcupine quills and gave the to Dick for safe keeping until we returned back to Camp......

Dick managed to spear himself with some of the quills, and somehow ""lost them"". Sooooooo -- we change his name from Dick Seal - and called him Sick Deal.....
