THE JOY OF CAMPING
(Written to celebrate the end of the first camp session and to anticipate the beginning of the second camp session.)
Jest a-settin’ in the shadders
An’ a-smilin’ at the sky
An’ a-dreamin’ God is movin’
In each livin’ thing ‘at’s nigh;
Jest a-soakin’ in the sunshine
An’ the fragrance-loaded breeze,
Jest a-thawn’ out yer heart and soul
Beneath the loaded trees
That’s campin’.
Jest a-dippin’ in the water
An’ a-dryin’ in the sun,
Jest a-sweepin’ out yer cabin
An’ a-crammin’ full of fun
Jest a-fillin’ up yer stomach
Bustin’ full of peace an’ health
Jest a-learning men can’t measure
This here nature’s gift of wealth –
That’s campin’.
Jim Carroll

That's pretty good stuff there Dave. You still have some of the log books? Maybe you could scan some of the better stuff and post it in the galleries?
I can't place Jim Carroll, though I see he was from St. Paul Minn. and was at Wyanoke only the one summer. That was the year Pat and I went to Africa for 3 weeks. _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

I believe Jim Carroll is the older gentleman standing two rows directly behind Bob Fox, and one row behind and between Bob Schmidt and me.
And as part of our trivia contest, we offer an extra scoop of vanilla ice cream with your brownie next Sunday if you can identify the staff member standing to Jim Carroll's left, between Hoppy in front and S. Blair behind. I'm thinking maybe we had two councilors with the initials "J.C." that year. I mean I know He's always with us, but I was surprised to see Him in the staff photo.
Or you can win both an extra brownie and an extra scoop of vanilla ice cream if you can remember what cracked many of the staff members up while this photo was being taken, especially Tom Falcon. Or why RuV, Mal, and Steve Downes needed to catch up on some sleep. _________________ Camper: J-8 1965 (Kevin Ryan), J-8 1966 (Mike Freeland), S-6 1967 (Russ Hatch), S-3 1968 (Jeremy Cripps), and JA-2 1969 (Dan Mannis).
JC: J-2 1970 (Bill Bettison) and J-3 1971 (Gene Comella). Councilor 1972, J-5 1973, and JA-1 1974 & 1975

Hey Dave,
When I first looked at that photo, I thought I was looking at you, with an uncharacteristic and LARGE mustache on the far left, next to John Neilsen (sp?), second in from the left, and second row down. If you hadn't pointed yourself out, I'd still think that was you. Who the hell was that??? Maybe that was just some brownie under the guy's nose, but it looks like a mustache.
Anyway, I don't know who that J.C. was, but I was thinking that the funny event might have been Mrs. Fetzer's (she looked a bit like Imogene Coca)snorting laugh, which we had just been discussing among ourselves when she demonstrated it. On the other hand, I think that was too late for the Fetzers. The Bournes had taken over by then I think.
I'm sorry to say that I wouldn't have recognized Jim Carroll if he came over and sat on my lap. No bells at all. _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

Some of you may remember an expression - "tapering a Carroll". I won't go into it but I'm sure Tom Falcon would remember - he may have coined the phrase.

Nice guy (Jim Carroll, assuming indeed that I'm putting the right face to the right name). But I can't say I remember much other detail, including Bob's "tapering" reference.
I'm sorry to say I don't recall the five people standing behind and between John Neilsen, Barbara, and Francis X. The one closest to Frank's head (just behind and to Frank's right), though I don't remember him, I know from the 1973 Planning Board photo (not shown here) was Stuart Allen, Jr. According to the catalog, he did Land Sports, Baseball, Basketball, Tennis, and Track. Yet even though he was designated "Planning Board", he didn't get to sit in the front row, which is a little odd. Maybe Norm just took his seat. "Screw this, I'm sittin'..."
The guy you're asking about (with the mustache)... maybe it was G. Everett Jeffrey, from Scotland? There are several names on the staff list in the catalog I can't match up with faces in this staff photo: besides Everett, also: Bill Wallace, David Craig, Robert Chase (all councilors), and junior councilor Porter Mortell. The other guy in The 1973 Council photo that I still don't recognize (besides the four behind Barbara, and the one I labeled "J.C.") is the one standing in the back row behind Sherman's left shoulder. If you, Mike, or anybody else can pair any of those names and faces, it would be appreciated.
EDIT: Wait, I'm missing a name. That's five names and six faces that aren't matched. The name I'm missing is Bruce Hamilton. I remember Bruce, and can picture his 1973 mug, but I don't see him here. Is he one of these guys?
And the "J.C." I was referring to, standing behind and between me and Hoppy... I didn't mean "Junior Councilor"... by using He and Him, I was suggesting his demeanor in this particular photo was rather, um, Christlike. The beard and his pose, to me, it's as if he's channeling the old masters' paintings of J.C. Himself. Maybe He walked among us, at least for the 1973 staff photo.

OK, thank you for that mental image. Much snow out there in Parker?? Or did you escape the blast? _________________ Camper: J-8 1965 (Kevin Ryan), J-8 1966 (Mike Freeland), S-6 1967 (Russ Hatch), S-3 1968 (Jeremy Cripps), and JA-2 1969 (Dan Mannis).

I got your reference to J. C. and that's what I was referring to. I have no idea who the guy is, unless, of course...
Man, I can't help with any of those other names. They all look like strangers to me. I guess they are.
I don't see Bruce Hamilton there either. He was at camp in '73 (Councillor, S-4), but I don't see him anywhere in the picture. Maybe he was in the Little Guest House when the picture was taken tapering a Carroll.
Oh yeah, that. WAY back in 1963, there was another Carroll, Bob, who was not very well respected by the rest of the staff. He was the butt of many unfortunate references including the cryptic "R. C. E. S." T-shirts and of course the tapering reference. I don't believe his tenure at Wyanoke extended beyond two weeks, even though he did "tickle the ivories". (Bob, how's that for diplomatic?)
Nope, we didn't miss the storm. We got about 2 feet here over two days. It cleared up today and the temps went into the 50s and it's REAL sloppy out there now.
Back to Bruce: As I mentioned elsewhere, Pat and I took a trip to Africa with Mom that summer and were away for 3 weeks (you should have seen our paychecks! High 2 figures!). Bruce is credited with probably taking the helm in S-4, Pat's tent, in 73, but isn't listed anywhere else or as havng any other group or position that summer. That might have been a command performance for those three weeks, because 73 was his last summer. Since Pat and I were there for the group shot, he must have come and gone by then. _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

OK, that's probably why Bruce is not in the photo. Pat is. Pat was there then, and Bruce was not. But I'm still missing a name.
These things happen. The catalogs were guides, but not gospel. For that, we need to ask our friend on the right, third row up.
1963. OK, that's why I didn't recognize the "tapering" reference. Before my time, Carroll of a different stripe.
TWO FEET?!? It's October for Chr... nope, not going there. _________________ Camper: J-8 1965 (Kevin Ryan), J-8 1966 (Mike Freeland), S-6 1967 (Russ Hatch), S-3 1968 (Jeremy Cripps), and JA-2 1969 (Dan Mannis).

I just noticed the high-water pants on Garth. He must have had a growth spurt that summer.
And, I don't EVER remember rubbing elbows that close with BMB. I get the impression that he sat between me and Garth so we wouldn't giggle and poke each other or talk during the ritual taking of the Staff Picture.
Hey, I just looked at the roster for '73 (typrwritten - one of the last. I'm wondering if R. L. Stevenson died around that time), and I think the J. C. we're looking at might be Larry Peck. Class? Anyone? Anyone?
So, Dave (A), what WAS the thing that made everyone laugh? Or was that a red herring? You can't be asking questions like that without you know the answer, eh? _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

I believe Larry's the guy 2nd row from the bottom, 4th from the left, on Taka's right. Or is that somebody else? Not a great picture of him, obviously. The highlights on his head are blowin' out, as we photogs say. But Larry had that early Beatle moptop look then, as I recall.
<squeak> Garth's slacks look uncomfortable. _________________ Camper: J-8 1965 (Kevin Ryan), J-8 1966 (Mike Freeland), S-6 1967 (Russ Hatch), S-3 1968 (Jeremy Cripps), and JA-2 1969 (Dan Mannis).
