Overnight camps, especially in Maine, find the summer of 2009 turned upside down by H1N1 flu:

Coming attractions for the rest of us, in the fall, many think.

Hard to imagine Wyanoke with a bottle of Purell at every dining room table and activity.

Do you say this "HunWun", or "AitchOneEnnOne", or "swine flu"? I avoid the "swine" connotation, because it feeds hysteria. There was a lot of media hysteria about H1N1 last spring, when every flu death was breathlessly reported. There doesn't seem to be anything particularly deadly about this strain-- so far. (Flu generally kills lots of people, but media were ignoring that detail last spring.) A lot of younger people have no natural immunity to H1N1, so it spreads easily.

A bottle of Purell is one thing, but I'm having trouble getting my arms around "serving staff".

I know someone who, despite a higher-than-normal intelligence, persists in believing that you can get H1N1 from pork. Maybe that persistence is the result of being a vegetarian, the "ah HAH! See? I told you meat was bad for you!" reaction, perhaps.

I spent a very long time (several days? I remember two weeks, but that can't be. I was 10.) in the infirmary with Scotty back in 1957, with some kind of respiratory crud. I was in one of those beds (remember how high they were relative to the ones in the tents?) right out there near the nurse's table and storage area where the gallons of Witch Hazel were kept, so everyone could gawk at me when they came in for their daily heroin shots. I heard "Wassa matter with him?" many times.

These days, with HIPPA and all, I'd have been sealed in one of those airy back rooms with no one to talk to.
