40 years ago I was a twelve year old camper residing in J-9. On the evening of 7/20 I recall a large number of campers and councilors gathering aroung a small black and white television in Bowdoin Chapel waiting for the televised moon landing. The anticipation was so thick you could cut it with a knife. The old wooden chairs were so uncomfortable my back still hurts. Many of us were tired, squirming and excited all at the same time. As Neil Armstrong was climbing out of the lunar module I tried to make sense out of the fuzzy images on the TV screen. I could see movement, but I wasn't sure what I was seeing. And then there Neil Armstrong was, jumping from the ladder onto the lunar module landing pad, followed by the famous words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." I don't remember how late we were able to stay up after that, but it certainly was an amazing moment to be shared with the boys and young men of Wyanoke. _________________ Jim Graves

Hi Jim, I cannot believe it was 40 years ago. I was on an overnight at another camp that we paddled to. A girls camp I believe. Anyways I remember being gathered in the main hall, or the dinning hall watching the landing/walk on a black and white TV. The images I saw made no sense so I couldn't reconcile what I was seeing with what I knew to be happening. It was strange and upon reflection a bit unreal, but a special memory nonetheless. Thank you Wyanoke, councilors, and fellow campers. _________________ Marc
