Every once in awhile I have a Wyanoke flashback. Today I was sweeping the pollen from the pine trees and the maple keys off of my front porch. I was brought back to Chapel duty and sweeping the floor using that green stuff to collect the dust. What was that stuff? _________________ 1965-1975

Gosh, Chris....
I do not mean to be sarcastic, but it seems to me we probably either we called it "sawdust" or maybe we called it "green sawdust." _________________ 1951: C-9. F. Whitemore, P. Durkee.

Good question, Chris, and I am sure that there is a 'real' name for that stuff, but, I think to the councilors using it, it was more just to keep the floor sweepings bound together and eventually picked up and discarded.
This compound may be a distant cousin, somewhat distanced by remarriage, to what was commonly referred to as 'bug juice' used at cook-outs. There was probably never an official name for it, either, but over the years it kept reappearing every Thursday night, albeit, maybe slightly different in ingredients, but doing the same job.
Speaking of pollen, this is the season for it. We had rain recently and I am hoping that most of the pollen may have been washed out of the trees and kept from blowing around. I remember standing in the tower of the Junior Dock looking at the water covered with a blanket of floating pollen thinking how unattractive that must be to a new camper about to try and pass his Wharf Test. "You mean I gotta dive into that".
Like you said, Chris, some memories do flashback! _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

Yes indeed. As David Bentley wrote: "some memories do flash back."
Here are two recent examples.
1. I was watching some of the Memorial Day parades and ceremonies. As a former Wyanoke bugler, I am especially moved when the person playing "TAPS" does an especially good job. Well -- at one of the ceremonies, I heard ECHO TAPS, which is not a common occurrence in events. It reminded me of the echo taps that we so often did on parent's weekends at Wyanoke.
2. Then there is a flashback that occurred when I was watching a commercial for one of the wood and lumber companies here in town. They went on and on and on and on about all of the great wood values of the different types of wood. The particular emphasis was on "Knotty Pine." My mind flashed back to "Naughty Pines" (check the spelling differences) at camp.
3. Then there was a segment dedicates to different branches of the armed services. The announcer was talking about different Navy routes taken by the Navy ships, and referred to them as "Navy Runs." My flashback here was to campers who were still not "potty trained" and so the On Duty councillors had to do a navy run and take the kids to the pines at around 10:30PM... _________________ 1951: C-9. Another Wyanoke Flash-Back
Here in North Georgia, the weather is cold, but a few weeks ago we set a record with 79. My wife and I were driving to a nearby town and took the scenic back route through farm country. Hence-- the background to my flash back.
Off to the side was a large field. My attention went to a boy who was about 13 or 14, and wearing the blue and white striped t-shirt, and gray short pants. Looked very much like a camper. Better yet, he was standing in the back of an older model pick-up truck that looked a lot like the Wyanoke GMC from back in the early 1960's. The truck was pulling a trailer that had canoes that were arranged vertically. YIKES !!! Just like heading off to the Saco River !!! _________________ 1951: C-9. F. Whitemore, P. Durkee.
