Overall:
East half, showing sites...
Was the "Campfire Site" as close to Cabintown as shown? (Seems like it was a "hike")...
West half, showing sites...
Today, there is a road—displaced a bit towards Johnson's Cove—named "Storytelling Road".
What was the "Beanhole"?

Now there's a trip down memory boulevard.
This map is way out of scale. The campfire site should be a little to the right on the map (east?), almost directly shoreward of the infirmary. A trail led from just east of C-7 to the campfire site where it was since at least 1956 (my first year). I remember hearing that the site had been moved from somewhere else before I got there, but I don't know where that was.
I don't remember the trail shown which goes from the Jr. camp and joins up with the Wharf - Pinecone trail along the shore. That trail should stop at the campfire site, or at least it did post-1956. The canoe dock was directly below the campfire site, having been moved from the wharf area to that position some time in the early 60s, I think.
The Rifle Range is shown much closer to the lake than it was. It should be about halfway up the hilll toward the senior camp, but is otherwise positioned pretty closely east to west.
Interesting that Land's End isn't named.
DMB, correct me if I'm wrong, but as I recall it, the Bean Hole dates back to the 20s and 30s, and was a place where Paul Byrd, the chef then, cooked up a huge pot of beans for the whole camp every thursday or something. He cooked them over a fire in the Bean Hole for a day or two.
Anyone know what the circle is near the Sears Nature House? It's drawn like the campfire site. Could that have been the original campfire site?
The Midget Rifle Range isn't shown, and neither are the Midget and Sr. Archery ranges.
I wonder what year this was drawn. C-9 isn't on there, but I think that was built in either '55 or '56. _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

Could the bean hole have been a spot to cook beans UNDER the fire. This was a common practice for cooking beans in the lumber camps of northern Maine. The Lumberman's Museum in Patten ME still does this once a year. They build cook fires and let the coals build up then move the coals aside, dig a hole and place the been pot in the hole. The coals are then put back over the filled in hole and re-stoke the fire. The beans cook over night and are dug up the next day. _________________ J-1 1970, Marc Liddle from Scotland

You're probably right Tom. I never did hear how they were cooked, and actually did wonder how they could keep a fire going under a big pot. This would explain that. Sounds like a great time though, with predictable results. _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

My guess is that "uniform"—at the lower right—puts this sketch in the 1930s.

A Wolfeboro-sponsored pamphlet just appeared at the Wolfeboro Library. Free, it features the area's summer camps, with much "ink" used for Camp Wyanoke and Wolfeboro Airpark discussions!
DB needs to get one, and one has been acquired for just such a purpose.
I've got to ask permission to print some of the photos, but this one (Wyanoke "Gymnastics") would probably be OK to post here:

Hi Bob,
DB, Steve Hood (who's picture you posted) and I contributed to that article and worked with the author for several months before that oiece came out. As a matter of fact, all of the Wyanoke pictures in that article came from our galleries, so you can use them. I don't know about the others, as far as permission goes.
Note the one picture of the campers saluting. It's printed backwards. _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

Yes, the gymnastics picture was in the Wolfeboro brochure that Mike Freeland referred to. Actually, three of the Wyanoke pictures were from the pictures posted on my gallery on the Wyanoke site. (Go to the personal galleries, and mine is the bottom link on the first page.) Two of the other pictures in the Wyanoke coverage from the Wolfeboro brochure were also from the the pictures I posted. One of them is me playing the bugle, and the other is my J-6 tent group in 1960. Hmmmmmmmm. I sure do look young in those pictures. Yikes !!!! And, you folks can certainly free to use my pictures in other ways if you want to do so....
Cheers to all. _________________ 1951: C-9. F. Whitemore, P. Durkee.

From a 1953 Wyanoke brochure:
In the following year's brochure, Mr. Berard got "cropped-out"...
